President Trump called for an end to the bombing of Gaza. Less than 24 hours later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes — responded by killing at least 61 more people, including four civilians who had gathered in desperation seeking food for their starving families.

The message Netanyahu sent was not subtle: American calls for restraint carry no weight. Words from Washington change nothing on the ground. The bombs keep falling.

United Voices had welcomed Trump’s call for Israel to stop bombing Gaza, seeing it as a potential opening for negotiations toward a lasting peace. What followed instead was a brazen demonstration of how little the Israeli government respects American political leadership when it believes U.S. military and diplomatic support will continue regardless of its conduct.

“Less than 24 hours after President Trump’s call for an end to the genocidal bombing campaign in Gaza, the Israeli occupation responded with more bloodshed — killing at least 61 more people, including those desperately seeking food for their starving families,” United Voices said. “This makes it clear that Netanyahu wants to prolong the genocide and thwart a permanent ceasefire agreement.”

The pattern here matters. Trump calls for restraint. Netanyahu kills more people. The weapons keep flowing. The diplomatic cover holds. And the cycle continues — because there are no consequences for defiance. Rhetoric without leverage is not policy. It is performance.

If the Trump administration wants to demonstrate that its calls for a ceasefire are serious — and not merely statements designed to create the appearance of concern while changing nothing — it has one tool that Netanyahu cannot ignore: the conditioning of U.S. military aid. Every diplomatic, political, and economic tool available must be used. The permanent ceasefire deal on the table must be finalized. And the United States must stop funding and defending a government engaged in what the world recognizes as a genocide.

Trump called for a ceasefire. Netanyahu killed 61 more people. The next move belongs to Washington.
