New York Attorney General Letitia James announced a settlement with the far-right Zionist group Betar US on Tuesday, compelling it to end what her office described as “a campaign of violence, harassment, and intimidation against Arab, Muslim, and Jewish New Yorkers.”

The settlement follows an extensive investigation by the Office of the Attorney General that found Betar US had repeatedly targeted individuals based on religion and national origin. The group filmed and threatened pro-Palestinian demonstrators, published personal information about activists online, and physically assaulted people at protests. James described the pattern as “an alarming and illegal pattern of bias-motivated harassment and violence designed to terrorize communities and shut down lawful protest.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Betar US is prohibited from engaging in harassment, doxxing, or intimidation campaigns. The group is also required to implement internal policies and submit to monitoring.

Betar US is not a fringe organization that emerged from nowhere. It has operated openly and publicly — submitting names of activists to law enforcement, coordinating with other pro-Israel pressure groups, and celebrating its targeting campaigns as civic virtue. Its activities are part of a documented ecosystem in which groups like Canary Mission compile dossiers on pro-Palestinian students and faculty, submit those dossiers to government agencies, and track the consequences — firings, visa revocations, deportations — as metrics of success.

The attorney general’s action is notable precisely because accountability at this level has been so rare. Betar US’s campaign was not a series of isolated incidents. It was an organized effort to make political solidarity with Palestinians dangerous in a major American city. The settlement forces it to stop — but it does not undo the chilling effect that campaign produced, or hold accountable the broader infrastructure that enabled it.
